Lying

Nanni send me this zen anectode:

A man and his wife were invited to a swanky masked Halloween Party. The wife got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone. He, being a devoted husband, protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed, and there was no need of his good time being spoiled by not going. So he took
his costume and away he went.

The wife, after sleeping soundly for one hour, awakened without pain, and as it was still early, she decided to go to the party after all. In as much as her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him.

She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice girl he could, and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there. His wife moved on up to him and being a rather seductive woman herself, he left his partner high
and dry and devoted his time to the new stuff that had just arrived.
She let him go as far as he wished; naturally, since he was her husband. Finally he whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed, so off they went to one of the cars and had a little romp.

Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away and went home and put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would make for his behavior. She was sitting up reading when he came in and asked what kind of a time he had.

He said, "Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you're not there."

Then she asked, "Did you dance much?"

He replied, "I'll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the den and played poker all evening. But I'll tell you... the guy I loaned my costume to sure had a real good time!"

------

so the matter is: who is lying in this nice short story?
-------------------------------------

It's a very good piece of contemporary philosophy, touching one of the most important subjects of modern life, i.e. cheating.

the man who actually was caught by his wife, and came up with that great excuse (still why finding up an excuse? it was just sex with your disguised wife. This goes beyond the reasoning of many men who are usually inclined to deny by nature, but surely not their wifes, who would see the lying as an acknowledgement of what they though the man would have done if they weren't actually there) ....

or the woman who actually knew that that man was not his husband, but deceived herself trying to deceive him, which is a nice way of not feeling ashamed of a nice shag ...

or both, in which case they had both fun with different people, quite ordinary, but still a possibility.

or nobody (then they both had good time, though his hard to compare poker willingly with friends and un-intentionally* having sex with a stranger)

about the last point, I doubt though that women could ever perform "un-intentionally" sex with a stranger, but of course this is why this joke is so funny.

Very nice story!

What is certain is that the person that knows for sure who was cheating is the woman - assuming she is able to tell if her “adventure” partner was her husband or not (as in: she was not completely drunk). Any way we think, she surely was in the middle of the action. The rest is just a matter of definitions.

About the last point: what is “un-intentionally”? “Unintentional” sounds like: “she slipped on a banana peel and fell 3 times in his dick”. This rarely happens (so guys, do not bother to plant banana trees at every street corner). However, among things that attract women is mystery. And what can be more mysterious that a perfect stranger!?!?

Unintentionality or its opposite does not affect responsibility. That is to say: even if “she slipped on a banana peel and fell 3 times in his dick” it is still her fault.

Unintentionally is not unwillingly, so yes, she is responsible. So is he (to keep the line of "reasoning": for leaving his dick up, unattended close to a banana peel. 3 times).
Unless she raped him. Which is another interesting topic, due to its (im-)possibilities ...
